Questions after a consultation or operation

A second opinion after care at The Lincoln Hospital

If advice or treatment at The Lincoln Hospital has left you with questions about your orthopaedic care, a separate consultation with Professor Paul Lee can help you understand the options and plan your next discussion.

Your orthopaedic second opinion

Make the questions specific to your experience

You may want to understand why an operation has been recommended, what is known about persistent symptoms, or what another procedure would aim to achieve. It helps to separate the decision you need to make now from the wider history of your care.

Set out when the problem began, what treatment you have received and how your symptoms have changed. Alongside your records and a clinical assessment, this helps focus the appointment on the questions that matter to you. A second opinion does not automatically mean changing your clinician or treatment.

Before your appointment

Bring the history, not just the latest scan

If you have had surgery, request the operation note and the relevant follow-up letters as well as imaging reports and access to the scans. A brief timeline of symptoms, treatment and rehabilitation helps put each document in context.

If you are considering surgery, bring the recommendation and your questions about the intended benefit, alternatives and recovery. The consultation provides a written summary that you can take back to your existing team.

Questions to take into the room

  • What does the information so far tell us about my symptoms?
  • What remains uncertain before deciding on more treatment?
  • Who should arrange and review any agreed next step?

You will receive a written summary. You can discuss it with your current team; having a consultation does not commit you to treatment with us.

Before arranging your review

Is this service part of The Lincoln Hospital?

No. Second Opinion Clinic is part of MSK Doctors. This is a separate service from Circle Health Group and The Lincoln Hospital, with appointments in Sleaford or Grantham.

Does asking for a second opinion mean making a complaint?

No. A clinical second opinion is a review of your diagnosis, treatment or recovery. It is not, by itself, a complaint investigation or a medico-legal report.
