About the appointment

Who you will see, where to come and how the consultation works.

How often does the clinic run?

Choose a date and time at The Keep in Grantham or MSK House in Sleaford when booking. This is a planned, non-urgent service; seek prompt help for new injuries or concerning symptoms rather than waiting for the clinic.

What is a second opinion?

A second opinion is an independent review of your diagnosis or the treatment you have been offered, given by a doctor who was not involved in your original care. It is a normal, everyday part of medicine. The General Medical Council expects doctors to respect a patient’s right to seek one.

Do I need a referral from my GP or consultant?

No. You can book directly. You do not need permission from your current team, though bringing your records and scans makes the appointment far more useful.

What happens on the day?

The appointment is 45 minutes, face to face. Professor Lee takes your history, reviews any imaging and reports you bring, and carries out a clinical examination before discussing what he sees. A MAI Motion scan is included at both clinics.

Is this a video consultation?

No. This service is face to face only, at The Keep Clinic in Grantham or MSK House in Sleaford.

Where are appointments held?

At The Keep Clinic in Grantham or MSK House in Sleaford, for patients from Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. See our locations pages for addresses and how to find each clinic.

What if my situation is urgent?

This is not an emergency service. If you have a new or worsening symptom that concerns you, contact your clinical team.

Getting ready

Your scans, letters and the questions you want to ask.

Clinic letters and imaging records ready to bring
What do I need to bring?

Contact the team before your appointment for instructions on sharing reports and existing imaging securely. Bring any scans (on disc or via a secure link), operation notes, clinic letters and discharge summaries you have. Our preparing for your appointment page has a full checklist and explains how to request records you do not already have.

How do I get copies of my scans and records?

You can ask the hospital or trust that holds them, under your right of access (a subject access request). Our preparing for your appointment page explains how, with links to the official guidance.

What if I do not have all my records yet?

Bring what you have and explain what is missing. The opinion can be based on your history, the available information and an examination, but missing records may limit what can be concluded. Professor Lee can explain what else would help.

Fees and payment

Understand what is included before you book.

How much does it cost?

The second-opinion consultation is £400. This includes notes and imaging review, a clinical examination, MAI Motion scan and a written summary. The scan is included at The Keep in Grantham and MSK House in Sleaford.

Can I use private medical insurance?

This service is self-pay. If your insurer covers a private orthopaedic second opinion, you may be able to reclaim the cost; check your policy and ask us for an invoice.

Does the fee include new scans or treatment?

The MAI Motion scan is included in the £400 fee at both clinics. Updated imaging, such as an MRI, other additional tests and treatment are arranged and charged separately. The cost is discussed before anything is booked.

04 / Your questions

Afterwards and your existing care

Your written opinion, your current team and deciding what happens next.

Taking a quiet moment to consider the next step
Will this affect my current care or my place on a waiting list?

No. A private second opinion sits alongside your existing care. You keep your NHS referral, your place on any waiting list and your relationship with your own team unless you choose to change it.

What do I get afterwards?

A written summary of the opinion, sent to you. With your consent, a copy can also go to your GP.

What happens after the second opinion?

That is your decision. Depending on what the appointment finds, Professor Lee can help you himself, or refer you on to someone better placed to help, or you may decide to continue with your current plan. Nothing is arranged for you without your agreement.

Will a second opinion always recommend a different treatment?

No. Professor Lee may agree with your existing plan, suggest another approach or explain why more information is needed. Understanding why the recommendation makes sense can be a useful outcome in its own right.

Do I have to transfer my care to Professor Lee?

No. You can use the written opinion to discuss your options with your existing team. Further care with Professor Lee or a referral to another specialist is a separate choice.

What if the two opinions disagree?

Ask what explains the difference: the diagnosis, the interpretation of the evidence, the timing or the treatment options. You can share your written summary with your existing consultant and discuss the reasoning before deciding what to do next.
